Lucilius
$68
“Nothing, Lucilius, is ours, except time.”
In the first of his letters to his friend Lucilius, Seneca writes that nature has entrusted us with this one thing only, and that it is so fleeting and slippery that anyone who will can take it from us.

The line
The line comes from Seneca's Moral Letters to Lucilius, in Richard M. Gummere's translation for the Loeb Classical Library (1917), a text of the Stoic tradition.
The words appear exactly as that translation gives them. The translation is in the public domain, and the text itself is in The Sacred Act’s library.
